iPods for teaching and learning Connect, Communicate and Create Nancy Mangum March 2009

Why Use iPods in the ESL Classroom?

Connect students to their learning and motivate them

Create Create higher order thinking skills for our students

Communicate give students a voice

How are we using iPods in our classrooms?

Students listen and watch lessons that focus on English language acquisition.

Students listen to and follow along with written text to reinforce written language.

Students record their voices to work on oral language skills.

Students review listening activities in a safe environment.

iPods can help our ESL students with: Listening Speaking Reading Fluency Engagement

There are lots of resources on the web for using iPods with our ESL students. itunes ipods4classrooms.wikispaces.com

When you find resources on the web you must first convert them to the mp4 format so they can be converted onto the iPod.

We also created some of our own activities Powerpoint – vocabulary activities Photostory – vocabulary activitiesvocabulary activities Camtasia – English Success SeriesEnglish Success Series

Students are also creating content for the ipods My School Five Senses

Lessons Learned Make time upfront with the teachers to focus on curriculum ideas to incorporate the iPods on a daily basis and creating alternative assessments Students do not keep any cords, they have to upload and charge at school. This prevents them from recording music on the iPod. Need one-to-one computer access for syncing iPods

Lessons Learned Engrave iPods Better communication needed up-front with parents and students about the ownership responsibility for the iPods iPod carrying cases for students
