2 Discussion How do you collaborate with other teachers? Do you share resources with one another or lesson ideas? How do you share class information and materials with your students? Do you use , handouts, many formats, or none at all? Do you ever feel like you don’t have activities or resources available that you need? If so, what do you do in those situations?

3 Committee Goals Initial Objectives:
To better prepare Level 2 students for Level 3 writing To provide more activities, lessons, and practices to strengthen students’ writing in conjunction with the Reading & Writing course The Practical Language Application (PLA) course provided a great opportunity to incorporate more writing lessons during class time. **Focus: Integration of grammar, writing, vocabulary, and reading to improve and better prepare Level 2 students with their writing skills.

4 Revised Goals Revised Objectives:
To encourage students to interact and utilize daily skills in classes Allow students more time to practice beyond computer lessons To include more hands-on writing-related activities to motivate students on Fridays To provide additional resources and variety for teachers to adapt ideas to their own teaching styles and classroom dynamics Provide resources not only for the PLA classes but also all courses **Focus: Integration of grammar, writing, vocabulary, and reading to improve and better prepare Level 2 students with their writing skills.

Step 1: go to hccs.edu Step 2: go to Information for Faculty Step 4: click on Programs Step 5: scroll on drop-down menu to English as a Second Language Step 3: click on Learning Web You’re there!

7 Time to try… Take out your phones and follow the steps to the Learning Web Click on PLA Interesting Activities Open document and identify two or three activities you would use in your classroom Discuss activities in your small group and be prepared to explain choices

8 Pre-tests and post-tests
Focus on four skills: grammar, writing, vocabulary, and reading Helps identify each student’s area(s) of needed improvement 10 questions grouped according to each of the four skills Using Scantron means easier instructor/student evaluation Additional practice based on pre-test results

9 Moving Forward We encourage you to explore your innovative activities and ideas to share with instructors to better prepare our students with engaging lessons! Change is sometimes overwhelming, but we challenge you to try at least one lesson or activity in your classroom. It might just inspire you to try a new activity or idea and share with fellow colleagues!
