STIC: COS Status - Keyes : 13 Feb 2001 Slide 3 of 21 COS Program  COS activities are a traditional-mode, new HST instrument development project coordinated with IDT led by PI James Green (Colorado); SI being built at BATC with the STIS NUV flight spare MAMA detector and FUV XDL detector from UC Berkeley (Sigmund).  STScI leads development of “front-end” (operations) and “back-end” (OPUS/HDA/calibration) ground system support for COS.  STScI COS project resources: 3 scientists (Keyes, McGrath, Bohlin), 7 system engineers, analysts, commanding and software developers

STIC: COS Status - Keyes : 13 Feb 2001 Slide 4 of 21 COS Design  Moderate Resolution (R~20,000) point-source spectroscopy; 0.1 arcsec pointing; 15 km/sec absolute (5 km/sec relative) radial velocity accuracy  Highest Possible Throughput  Maximize wavelength coverage per exposure  FUV: – single reflection system – large format solar-blind cross delay line (XDL) detector  NUV: – FUV concept not available (no large format detectors) – STIS flight spare MAMA with scanning system, enhance wavelength coverage through use of three camera optics

STIC: COS Status - Keyes : 13 Feb 2001 Slide 6 of 21 COS Detectors  FUV: Cross Delay Line (XDL) detector > windowless, CsI photocathode, MCPs feed XDL anode > two 85 mm (dispersion-direction) x 10 mm segments (~10 mm gap between segments) > 2 x 16,384 x 1024 pixels; ~7 pixels per resolution element along dispersion > “stim pulses” to characterize stretching and shifting in both coordinates (unlike FUSE)  NUV: MAMA (STIS flight spare) > sealed CsTe photocathode > 25 mm x 25 mm detector format (constrains optical design) > 1024 x 1024 pixels; no subarrays; 2 pixels per resolution element > opto-isolator problem fixed
