Feeding the Planet CGW4U

How would you define the following?  Hunger  Malnutrition  Famine

World Hunger  There are about 7 billion people in the world With an estimated 868 million hungry people, 12% (or 1 in 8) are hungry Almost all the hungry people (852 million) live in developing countries, representing 15% of the population of developing counties There are 16 million people undernourished in developed countries

World Hunger  Children who are poorly nourished suffer up to 160 days of illness each year  Poor nutrition plays a role in at least half of the 10.9 million child deaths each year (5 million deaths)  Malnutrition, as measured by stunting, affects 32.5% of children in developing countries

Getting better or worse?  Global population growth projections of 2–3 billion people over the next 40 years, combined with changing diets, will result in a predicted increase in food demand of 70 % by 2050

Can we feed everyone?  The world produces enough food to feed everyone  World agriculture produces 17% more calories per person today than it did 30 years ago, despite a 70 percent population increase This is enough to provide everyone in the world with at least 2,720 kilocalories (kcal) per person per day

Can we feed everyone?  Per capita food waste by consumers in Europe and North-America is estimated at kg/year, while this figure in Sub-Saharan Africa and South/Southeast Asia is only kg/year

Causes of Hunger  What are the principle causes of hunger?

Causes of Hunger  Poverty  Economic systems  Conflict  Climate Change
