What? The Lewis and Clark expedition also known as the Corps of Discovery was the first American expedition of explorers sent to explore the west. They made their way through the continental divide to the Pacific coast. It was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson shortly after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. It consisted of a select group of U.S. Army volunteers under the command of Captain Meriwether Lewis and his friend Lieutenant William Clark.

When? The expedition of Lewis and Clark called the “Corps of Discovery” started preparing in fall 1803. On May 14, 1804 William Clark and nearly four dozen other men went to meet up with Meriwether Lewis. They met up with him on May 20, 1804. On May 20, 1804 the expedition set out on their journey. On the morning of September 23, 1806 Lewis and Clark ended their journey.

Where? The Corps of Discovery started and finished upstream Missouri River from their St. Louis-area camp. They passed through the lands of the Mandan and the Sioux. Lewis and Clark met Sacagawea and started to cross the Great Plains, and then came to the Rocky Mountains. After the mountains, they followed the Columbia river to where it empties into the Pacific Ocean, on the border of present-day Washington and Oregon.

Who? The expedition was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. There was also 33 other men on the mission. Meriwether Lewis served as Jefferson’s presidential assistant and was a former army captain. William Clark was a lieutenant. President Jefferson chose Lewis to lead the mission. Lewis chose Clark to be co-leader on this mission. They met Sacagawea who was their translator. Sacagawea was a Shoshoni wife of a French fur trader who lived in Mandan Camp. A man on the mission was said to be the first person of African descent to cross the continent.

Why? This Expedition was put in place to discover the west of the Mississippi River. U.S. citizens knew very little about western American Indians or the land they lived in. In addition, Jefferson wanted to see if there was a river route that could be taken to the Pacific Ocean. Also, he wanted them to study the botany of the west. Jefferson wanted the expedition to make a peaceful relationship with the Indians.
