Senior English September 28, 2015

Do Now Describe an argument you had with a friend or family member. What was your claim? What was your evidence? What was your conclusion? How is a conversational argument different from an academic argument?

Agenda Learning Target: I can support my arguments with evidence. I can discover what I need to do to write an effective argument. 1. “Writing a Research Article: Advice to Beginners” 2. 3 Things to Keep in Mind 3. Evidence-Based Argument Groups

“Writing a Research Article: Advice to Beginners” Read and Annotate What are three things to keep in mind when doing argumentative research and writing?

Argument Groups 1. Each table group (6 people) will choose an issue to debate that is related to jobs and majors – for example: free tuition, minimum wage, tipping at restaurants 2. The side closest to the door will argue for, the side further from the door will argue against 3. Each side will have laptops on which you should research evidence for your position to bring to the argument

Argument Groups 1 minute to establish your group’s position (opening remarks) 3 minutes to argue without looking at laptops 5 minutes to conduct research and strengthen your argument 1 minute for closing remarks.

Close Write: How did you find evidence to support an argument today (be specific)? What are three things you need to keep in mind when writing argumentatively?
