2 Next audio journal and summary
Please check the class website “Homework” section. Follow the instructions. Deadline: Audio journal: Next Thursday (April 12th ) 11:59 p.m. Summary: Next Tuesday (April 10th) in class.

3 Today Group discussion and team debate.

4 Team debate You will be divided into a team of 3 people.
Your team will argue for ONE side of an issue. The team opposite from you will argue the other side.

5 Team debate One team = argue for. “Affirmative”
Other team: Argue against. “Negative”

6 Team debate Part 1: You will be given 10 minutes to work with your team to develop your ideas. Make some notes to help you remember and organize your ideas.

7 Team debate Part 2: Using the notes from your discussion:
- You have 10 minutes to prepare your opening statements. - Choose which member of your team will give the opening statement.

8 Team debate Part 3 (a): Opening statements.
“Affirmative” team will go first. - You have up to 5 minutes to present. “Negative” team: Listen carefully to the affirmative team’s argument. You should write down notes about what they say so you can argue against it later.

9 Team debate Part 3 (b): Opening statements.
“Negative” team will go next. - You have up to 5 minutes to present. “Affirmative” team: Listen carefully to the affirmative team’s argument. You should write down notes about what they say so you can argue against it later.

10 Team debate Part 4: Prepare counter-argument.
You will have 10 minutes to discuss how you will reply to the other team’s opening statement. Use the notes you made during the other team’s opening statements.

11 Team debate Part 4: counter-argument preparation.
- You will have 5 minutes to prepare the presentation of your counter argument. - Again, choose who will present this. It CANNOT be the same person who gave the opening statement.

12 Team debate Part 4 (a): counter-argument Negative team will go first.
You have up to 5 minutes to present your counter argument. Affirmative team: listen carefully and take notes.

13 Team debate Part 4 (b): counter-argument
Affirmative team will go next. You have up to 5 minutes to present your counter argument. Negative team: listen carefully and take notes.

14 Team debate Part 5: Prepare closing statement.
You will have 10 minutes to discuss and prepare closing statements. - Choose a new person to present the closing statements.

15 Team debate Part 5: closing statement.
Each team has up to 5 minutes to give closing statements. - Negative team will go first. - Affirmative team second.
