2 Today we are starting research papers! (YAY!)
English III’s research paper is an argumentative essay, meaning you must choose a topic that has two arguable sides to it. Research basics: Formal language (no first person) Specific structure Cite sources 4-5 pages, MLA formatting Strict formatting standards

Must present your claim, as well as the counterclaim Topics will be picked today from the SIRS database – keep in mind that these should be school appropriate and non-offensive topics Assignment details have been posted on my website, as well as the Canvas page, which is where everything will be turned in to, except the final document. That will be turned in on turnitin.com

5 In addition: Also while writing the paper, you should strategically utilize logos, ethos, and pathos in your writing. Logos: persuasion using logic Ethos: persuasion using ethics or credibility Pathos: persuasion using emotion You should utilize sources and facts that display each of these methods of persuasion.

6 In the google folder Color code each of your sources so that it is easier to identify how many sources you have completed. Source 1 – RED Source 2 – BLUE Source 3 – GREEN Source 4 – PURPLE Source 5 – ORANGE Source 6 – BLACK Source 7 – HIGHLIGHT YELLOW (if needed) Source 8 – HIGHLIGHT TEAL (if needed) Create three Google Docs, and label them Point 1, Point 2, and Counter Point Inside the Docs, create a table with three columns and at least 10 rows These are where you are going to track your facts as we work through our sources. The left side of the chart should contain direct quotes, the middle should contain paraphrases of the quotes, and the right side should contain the citations.

7 Today We need to decide upon topics today to keep the process moving at the right pace. Google Form Link: Explore the SIRS database for the topics they have information on – these are great because they give you two sides of the argument as well as articles to go along with the arguments. Create your research class folder in Google Drive and share it with Ms. Murphy – title it (Last Name, First Name, English III)
