Literary Analysis Revision Steps

Literary Present Tense Underline all verbs. Make sure they are in present tense. Put a small dot under all linking verbs (is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been). Determine if passive voice or the present progressive tense is correct. If possible, change them to simple present tense.

Topic/Concluding Sentence Does the TS connect to the thesis? Does the TS contain an opinion or an argument? Does the TS cover the contents of the paragraph? Do some of the paragraph’s ideas fall outside of the scope of the TS? Does the CS reflect the ideas of the TS without repeating any key words? Is the point proved by the time the CS is reached?

Quotation Blending & Punctuation Are all quotations introduced? A quotation can never stand alone. Are all quotations properly punctuated? Check for the following and fix if present: – No space between the final quotation mark and parenthesis: ”(14). – A p. or page designation within the parenthesis: (p. 14). – A period or comma inside the quotation mark:.” (14). Or.” (14)

Commentary Highlight everything that is a CM. Another way to define CMs is your thoughts or ideas that are not in the story (i.e. opinion, insight, analysis, interpretation, inference, personal response, feelings, evaluation, explication, and reflection). If necessary, improve the commentary.
