TODAY’S OBJECTIVES Review and reflect on our argument essays Analyze the role of obedience and disobedience in Nazi Germany Analyze an argument about one of today’s humanitarian crises Closing Task: rhetorical précis

ARGUMENT WORKSHOP- ESSAY COMMENTS  Integrate quotes & use proper citations  Mercy killing is not a verb  RIP words  Excellent structure- some loose ends: end paragraph by connecting back to main claim and use transitions  Many argued that George was justified because his life would be easier

ARGUMENT WORKSHOP- REVIEW  Underline your thesis. Does it take a clear position?  Underline topic sentences. Do they clearly support your thesis?  Circle specific support used.  Highlight the sentence (at end) that ties the paragraph back to the main claim.  Star the paragraph(s) that include(s) the concession/refutation.  Highlight transition words/phrases.  Find three verbs that could be upgraded and change them (you can use the list of verbs on your RIP word list). Change any RIP words that appear in your essay.

ARGUMENT WORKSHOP- REFLECT Writing folder:  On your reflection sheet, label this essay “Argument- Of Mice and Men.”  In the self-evaluation section, write three goals for improvement.  Identify any RIP words used.  Check in on learning goal B.

THE OATH Copy the oath onto “Lesson 9: Handout 3.” What stands out to you about this oath? Does it remind you of anything? Why do people take oaths? Why are they powerful? Why is this oath powerful? Compare to the Pledge of Allegiance. Read the passage.
