TODAY’S AGENDA Expectations for summer reading assignment Complete SOAPSTone for John Smith Rhetorical Précis- introduction and modeling Reflection

SUMMER READING: PART 1 This part does not need to be in essay format. You may title each summary for the section it summarizes. Include: 5 main points with textual support (for each point). One clarifying question. Both parts may be in one document. Please adhere to the conventions of MLA format and have an appropriate heading (no title page).

SUMMER READING: PART 2 Be sure to follow the example given on the assignment sheet (but double space yours). I realize that it is very difficult to have citations from three different places in the book; try your best. If you aren’t able to find three for all of them, I won’t be upset. However, if each commandment only has one textual citation, you aren’t providing enough evidence of thorough reading to receive a good grade on the assignment.

SUMMER READING: WORKS CITED Your project should include a Works Cited page, since you are citing from sources in the project. Without it, your citations are technically plagiarized! I will automatically deduct one letter grade from your score if you forget this important piece.

SUBMISSION Late assignments will receive the late work penalty! No matter what! If you are absent on Monday, please email your assignment to police.audra@cusd80.com.police.audra@cusd80.com If you are unable to print your assignment, please email it to police.audra@cusd80.com. police.audra@cusd80.com If everyone turns it in on Monday, I will give your class extra credit! Any other questions?

RHETORICAL PRECIS You used this structure last year in your annotated bibliographies. We will use this as “training wheels” for the rhetorical analysis. It is a highly structured, four sentence paragraph that includes essential elements. Students are also encourage to incorporate brief quotations to convey a sense of style and tone.

SENTENCE 1 Name of author, (optional: a phrase describing the author), genre, and title of work and date in parenthesis (additional publishing information in parenthesis or note), a rhetorically accurate verb (such as asserts, suggests, argues, claims, implies, etc.) and a THAT clause containing the major assertion (thesis statement) of the work.

SENTENCE 2 An explanation of how the author develops and/or supports the thesis, usually in chronological order.

SENTENCE 3 A statement of the author’s apparent purpose followed by an “in order to” phrase.
