NOVELS  Breadwinner- 1 st Nine Weeks  Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World- 2 nd Nine Weeks  The Cay- 4 th Nine Weeks

NOVELS  Breadwinner  By Deborah Ellis Conscious of the strict limitations imposed by the Taliban rulers of Kabul, Afghanistan, on women’s freedom and behavior, eleven-year-old Parvana disguises herself as a boy in order to earn money so that her family can survive after her father’s arrest.  The Cay  By Theodore Taylor A young white boy who has been recently blinded learns about vision, courage and race with the help of a wise, old Black man.  Shipwrecked at the bottom of the World  by Jennifer Armstrong  Describes the events of the 1914 Shackleton Antarctic expedition when, after being trapped in the frozen sea for nine months, their ship, The Endurance, was finally crushed, forcing Shackleton and his men to make a very long and perilous journey to reach inhabited land.

GRADING  The students will be graded as follows:  Homework  Small Projects  Quizzes  Tests  Accelerated Reader 10 Points each nine weeks  (10 points required by October 28 th )  All of this will be graded by a point system.  All of the above will vary in points.

EXPECTATIONS ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR CLASS  Assignment Book and Novel  Paper  Pencil  Completed Homework Assignment  Participate in class  Keep a neat notebook  This will help in their organizational skills and help them prepare better for test, quizzes, homework, and small projects
