1492 Columbus lands on island in the Caribbean Sea 1497 John Cabot reaches the eastern coast of North America 1524 Verrazano sails along the coast of North America and meets the Lenape 1609 Henry Hudson sails into Sandy hook Bay and meets the Lenape 1614 The Dutch began to claim land in eastern North America What happened in 1492? In what year did John Cabot reach the eastern coast of North America? Who meet the Lenape first, Verrazano or Hudson? How many years passed between Columbus’ landing and the arrivalof John Cabot? Columbus landed on islands in the Caribbean Sea 1492 Verrazano 5 years

Suppose you were a sailor on Giovanni da Verrazano’s ship, La Dauphine. How would you describe the events that occurred just after you reached North America?  When we finally reached North America, we sailed along its eastern coast. At one point, the Lenape came aboard our ship. They were not afraid of us and seemed very friendly. Later, we anchored our ship off coast. Verrazano went out in a small boat to explore the bay and the river.

 Compare and contrast the life of an indentured servant in the New Jersey colony to the life of an enslaved African. How were their lives the same? How were they different?  Both indentured servants and enslaved Africans worked for landowners. Both groups worked long, hard hours. Indentured servants signed and agreement to work for the landowners. They were given their freedom after a period of time. Enslaved Africans, however, had no such written agreement. They were forced into slavery and had no promise of freedom. They were treated as property.
