3 Who Went Where & Why? John Cabot: (also known as Giovanni Caboto) From Italy Sailed for England 1497 Important Contributions: -1 st European in N. America since the Vikings. -Explored Newfoundland, Novia Scotia, and New England -Claimed land for English colines - Thought he was in Asia at the time!

4 Who Went Where & Why? Giovanni da Verrazano From Italy Sailed for France Set sail in 1524 Important Contributions: -Explored east coast of North America (NC to Maine) -1 st European to enter New York Bay -Established French claims -Couldn’t find a Northwest Passage

5 Who Went Where & Why? Jacques Cartier From France Sailed for France Three voyages (1534, 1535, & 1541) Important Contributions: -Explored Canada, Labrador, Newfoundland, St. Lawrence River/Gulf -Started settlement in Quebec that failed! -Paved the way for French colonies in North America

6 Who Went Where & Why? Martin Frobisher From England Sailed for England Set sail 1576 Important Contributions: -Claimed Baffin Island, Resolution Island, & Frobisher Bay for England -Sailed through the Hudson Straights and built (failed) mining settlements there

7 Who Went Where & Why? Sir Francis Drake: From England Sailed for England Set sail 1577 Important Contributions: -2 nd circumnavigation of the globe (after Magellan) -Raided Spanish ships and settlements along the way

8 Who Went Where & Why? John Davis: From England Sailed for England Set sail 1586 Important Contributions: -Explored Greenland & Arctic region looking for the N.W. Passage -Discovered Falkland Islands in the S. Atlantic (1592) -Davis Strait b/w Greenland & Baffin Island is named after him

9 Who Went Where & Why? Henry Hudson: From England Sailed for England & Holland Three voyages 1607, 1609, & 1610 Important Contributions: -Three failed voyages, so England wouldn’t pay for more. -Explored the Hudson River, discovered Hudson Bay (but thought it was the Pacific Ocean).

10 Who Went Where & Why? Robert La Salle: From France Sailed for France Set sail 1682 Important Contributions: -Sailed south from Canada from the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. -Claimed all land along the Mississippi for France
