On Page 5: What do you think the word “organic” means? Where have you heard it before?

 Explain what you think the term “organic compound” means.

According to Merriam-Webster  (1) : of, relating to, or derived from living organisms  Meaning: It is either living or once was living

ORGANIC HUMANS ALIVE FOOD

Many labels in the grocery store – means...  It is grown with the use of feed or fertilizer of plant or animal origin. They do not use chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or pesticides.

 Organic Compounds are compounds that contain carbon (element) and other atoms. (write in center of foldable)  All living things contain organic compounds. (write under definition)

It must have carbon and at least one of the following elements: ~ Hydrogen~ Oxygen ~ Phosphorous~ Sulfur ~ Nitrogen *There are exceptions – example: Carbon Dioxide. Contains carbon but is not part of a living organism. (Write Under definition in foldable)

*Must have C (Carbon) and at least one … H (Hydrogen O (Oxygen) P (Phosphorus) S (Sulfur) N (nitrogen)

 CO 2  H 2 O  C 6 H 12 O 6 -All are formulas -All are compounds -All contain elements -All contain atoms -All have oxygen Are any of these compounds organic? If so, how do you know?

Directions:  Separate cards into two piles: “Organic” and “Inorganic”  Get your cards checked  In your journal create a T-Chart labeled Organic and Inorganic.  Record the compounds under the proper heading.  Highlight the element(s) that make it organic
