1 phosphorous, nitrogen, or sulfur
ORGANIC COMPOUNDS 7.6A Identify that organic compounds contain carbon and other elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorous, nitrogen, or sulfur

2 ORGANIC Yes…..the word “Organic” seems to appear everywhere: on food wrappers, in advertisements, a whole section in the grocery store. This use of the word Organic is not the same as when it is used in the context of science class The opposite of organic is “Inorganic”

3 Organic Compounds Must contain the element carbon (Symbol = C) Example = Cholesterol C27H46O

4 Organic= Carbon In 7th Grade we taught you that anything, compound, or substance with Carbon in it was Organic…. This is still true but now you fully understand the periodic table, chemical formulas, and chemical equations. Look for the capital C, representing carbon, and if you find it…The compound or formula it is in is Organic. That simple!

5 What else do I need to know about identifying organic compounds?
That most organic compounds also contain the elements: H, O, N, P and S. Fossil fuels are organic. Our body can breakdown (digest) organic compounds to release energy or build new tisseus- carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Organic compounds exist in living and non-living parts of the environment. Try these examples on the next slide.

6 Organic or Inorganic? Caffeine C8H10N4O2 Stomach Acid HCl
Aspirin C9H8O4 Drano NaOH Salt NaCl Sugar C12H22O11
