8 13. How are organic compounds broken down in our bodies?
a) Cells perform chemical reactions which release energy from food b) Most chemical reactions need energy to drive them this comes from cellular respiration that happens in the mitochondria c) All animals get energy they need through cellular respiration: oxygen is combined with glucose (digested food) to form ATP (energy) d) Carbon dioxide and water are given off as a by-product e) All the activities carried out by a cell make up its metabolism
