Copyright – no registration required Works do not have to say “copyright by” or have the copyright symbol, ©, in order to have copyright protection. Public Domain Items in the public domain may be used without copyright restrictions. Find by typing the item and “public domain” when searching for music, graphics, literature, etc. 14Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved. Images and other multimedia content used with permission.

Public Domain Works in the public domain are those whose intellectual property rights have expired, have been forfeited, or are inapplicable. Examples include the works of Shakespeare and Beethoven, most of the early silent films, the formulae of Newtonian physics, Serpent encryption algorithm and powered flight. 15Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved. FAIR USE 1. Examples of fair use include commentary, search engines, criticism, parody, news reporting, research, teaching, library archiving and scholarship. 2. FAIR USE 1. The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes 2. The nature of the copyrighted work 3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole 4.
