 science b.2(A) plan and implement descriptive and simple experimental investigations including asking well- defined questions, formulating testable hypotheses, and selecting and using equipment and technology;  science b.3(E) connect Grade 5 science concepts with the history of science and contributions of scientists.  social studies b.24(E) predict how future scientific discoveries and technological innovations could affect life in the United States.  Art a(2) Creative expression/performance. The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a variety of media with appropriate skill.  Art b(2) By analyzing artistic styles and historical periods students develop respect for the traditions and contributions of diverse cultures. Students respond to and analyze artworks, thus contributing to the development of lifelong skills of making informed judgments and evaluations.

 5 th grade class  Students ages 9-11  I would use this art lesson in my 5 th grade classroom to Introduce the life and works of Leonardo DaVinci in a brief art history lesson and incorporate the project into science and technology lessons by encouraging students to create their own inventions.

 Learner will recognize the contributions of Leonardo DaVinci.  Learner will invent a new machine for the 21 st century.  Learner will create a model of the invention.

 Identify and discuss the Contributions of Leonardo DaVinci during the Renaissance period of art by showing students his works and biography through media and the book Leonardo DaVinci for Kids: His Life and Ideas by: Janis Herbert. Explain how he was an artist, scientist, inventor, sculptor, mathematician, philosopher and architect.  Have students choose a partner and form groups no larger than three students to formulate ideas on a new machine that would make life easier in the 21 st century.  Students will make a diagram of the machine and explain how it works.  Students will create a model of the invention with cardboard boxes and other found objects.  Students will paint/color the machine after it is assembled and add fabric, glitter, yarn,buttons, etc… to finish the project.  Students will present the final invention to the class.

 Students should be able to identify who Leonardo DaVinci is and identify his works by telling you what their favorite works by him were and why in a brief 1-3 page report that is typed and double spaced with 12- point font in Times New Roman.  Students will be evaluated by their presentation of their inventions based on answering these questions: › What is the name of the invention? › What does it do? › How does it work? › How much will it cost? › Where could you find or purchase it?
