Understanding how great our planet really is, will help in our journey. Charlie and Lola are perfect sidekicks to help us take on recycling!

By reading We Are Extremely Very Good Recyclers you too can come up with ways to help our planet. You will also create a “how to” commercial on recycling. This commercial will be made out of recycled items, that we have collected in our groups as a class.

Answer the following questions in your composition notebook: 1.Does your family recycle, how? 2.What is recycling? 3.What items do you think are the most important to recycle? 4.Do you see recycling in your classroom? If so, how? Find ways that you can recycle objects at home and at school and make a list in your composition notebook. Decorate recycle bins for the classroom. -Each group will receive one recycle bin. -Each group will paint their recycle bin with chalkboard paint. - Each group will decorate their box.

5 Student Page Top Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Teacher page Credits Process continued In your “recycle groups” collect a total of 150 items for each category of paper, cardboard and plastic. -These items can be collected form home, school, church or anywhere else. -Each group will be responsible for keeping track of the items collected by the group members. -Each week the group will be responsible for tallying the items collected and telling the teacher how many items they collected. -The group that collects 150 items first will receive three starts each on the behavior chart.

This lesson is to help inform students on the importance of recycling. The book “We are Extremely Very Good Recyclers” is fun way to introduce recycling to the students. By doing this webquest students will be able to learn about recycling through using knowledge in math, language and science.

This lesson can easily be designed for all students depending on their individual needs. Before beginning this lesson the students will have to have a basic understanding of reading and writing. They also have to work well in a group. The students need to be familiar with collecting and sorting data and materials that they find.

(The teacher will hand out copies of the book and questions before quiet reading time) Answer the following questions in your composition notebook: (The teacher will collect the questions after the students have completed them) 1.Does your family recycle, how? 2.What is recycling? 3.What items do you think are the most important to recycle? 4.Do you see recycling in your classroom? If so, how? Find ways that you can recycle objects at home and at school and make a list in your composition notebook. (The teacher will instruct the students that the list will be due the following day and the teacher will collect and review the list the students have made.) Decorate recycle bins for the classroom. (The teacher will hand out four pieces of paper so the students can design what their recycle bin will look like. The teacher will give students examples of what to put on their bins.) -Each group will receive one recycle bin. -Each group will paint their recycle bin with chalkboard paint. - Each group will decorate their box.

This lesson can easily be designed for all students depending on their individual needs. It does not involve more then one class and will be taught in a period over a week. It is taught in the science period of the class. This lesson is multidisciplinary because it involves several other areas such as math, reading, writing and communication skills. When dividing the class into groups the teacher will choose students who will work well together and share the work load evenly between one another. To maximize the success of the lesson the teacher needs to be able to place the students in well rounded groups and monitor the groups as they complete their work. The teacher also needs to be able and willing to answer any questions the students have in their groups. It is easy enough for a novice teacher because everything is laid out step by step. This lesson does not require experience with role playing or debates.

This lesson will also provide the students with hands-on experience and working with other classmates. The students will not only be using the science skills they will be accessing their prior knowledge in reading, writing and math. This lesson has instilled in our students the awareness of the importance of recycling.
