When are you near the road? Walking to, from work Exercise Walking the dog Sightseeing Vehicle Emergency

Did you know? 122 pedestrians were killed on Delaware roadways between There were a total of 1,824 pedestrian involved crashes during this time period. 3 of every 4 of these crashes occurred in New Castle County. 38% involved alcohol. Most involved an error on the part of the pedestrian.

Vehicle speed at the time of the crash determined whether the victim survived.

Why are people getting hit? Darting into the road. Getting in or out of a parked vehicle. Failing to obey a traffic sign or signal. Failing to yield right of way. Improperly in the roadway. Inattentive. Not visible. Walking wrong way.

Safe Walking Tips: Cross only at crosswalks and intersections. Do not step into a crosswalk in the path of a vehicle, even though you have the right of way. Use sidewalks. If there isn’t a sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far off the edge of the road as possible. Carry a flashlight or other reflective item at night. It’s the law. Do not walk under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Do not hitchhike.
