Berlin Conference *(1884) – European officials met in Berlin, Germany to settle rival claims to land in Africa No African nations were invited 20 years later, almost the entire African continent was partitioned out to European countries Europeans used: Strong military & superior technology to settle African colonies Trickery & surprise to conquer & divide African nations Ethiopia – was the only nation to resist colonization

caliph – a religious or political leader expansion – the process of growing your empire alliance – joining forces with another group or nation expedition – a journey taken to accomplish a goal parley – a discussion or conference partition – to divide up among different groups or nations
