Enhancing Capacity to Scale Up Community Driven Development in Anglophone Africa Why the Community Driven Development (CDD) Approach? What does it mean to you? Is this new?

Enhancing Capacity to Scale Up Community Driven Development in Anglophone Africa Long-term Goal: Communities, in collaboration with decentralized government, using improved livelihood and governance strategies driven by local knowledge, values and priorities.

Enhancing Capacity to Scale Up Community Driven Development in Anglophone Africa Shorter-term Objective: Participants in this course act to scale-up the CDD approach, e.g., promote or make policy changes, participate in CDD program or project design, preparation, implementation, and/or evaluation.

Methods continued: Building on local expertise and adapting to local context Learning-by-doing: Distance Learning, action planning, field trainings, monitoring, acknowledging mistakes South-south exchange, face to face and virtual Links with operations: donor, government and private sector more Establishing long-term partnerships with local institutions (business planning and marketing as needed) Using Distance Learning to expand reach, support networking and stretch resources

Course Objectives : To define the principles and practices of Community Driven Development To identify the policy environment, opportunities and/or challenges of effective implementation of a CDD project To analyze and use techniques to manage potential conflicts inherent in local development To incorporate tools for social accountability into project and policy design

How will we learn? Face-to-face and Distance learning (videoconferencing, videotape, and on-line discussions) Continuous learning, documenting and feedback – through: Session feedback Daily wrap-up sessions Final workshop evaluation

Format for Each Session: 2 hour off-line (no video) session: –Country Exercise 2 hour on-line (video) session: –Report from countries on exercises –Presentation by resource people –Questions & answers/Discussion ½ hour off-line session (no video): –Wrap up and Evaluation Note: session on 17 th is all off-line.

Training Materials Binders –Sessions briefs that provide overview of each session and smiley face evaluations –Copies of overheads for each session –Copies of country exercises –List of reading materials for preparation and follow-up to the sessions Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) CDRom to be mailed out after course
