The Periodic Table

Periodic Table Allows comparison of one element or group of elements to other elements or groups of elements Mendeleev 1870’s

Horizontal rows are called Periods Vertical columns are called Groups

Anatomy of the Periodic Table Elements organized by increasing atomic number (Protons) Also organized by properties. There is a periodic repetition of the properties of the elements How many periods are there in the periodic table?

Metals, Non-metals and Metalloids Metals – good conductors of heat and electricity. High luster. Solid at room temperature (except Hg) Nonmetals – most are gases. Properties opposite those of metals Metalloids properties similar to those of metals and nonmetals

What is the atomic number for Lithium? What is the atomic mass? How many electrons does it have in it’s outer energy level?

What is the atomic number of Sodium? What is it’s mass? How many electrons does it have in it’s outer energy level? How is sodium like lithium?

What is the atomic number of Beryllium? What is it’s mass? How many electrons does it have in it’s outer energy level? How is beryllium different than lithium?

The number of electrons in the outer energy level determine the properties of the element including the type of bonding that it does.
