1 Periodic Table of Elements
Metals, nonmetals, and metalloids Periodic Table of Elements

2 Objectives: Understand how scientists organize the elements
Learn about the properties of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids

3 Dimitri Mendeleev Given credit for creating the first periodic table in 1869 He arranged the elements according to the atomic mass He was able to predict the existence of other elements

4 Periodic Properties Mendeleev noticed that a pattern of properties appeared when he arranged them Properties repeat regularly

5 How is this useful? An element’s properties can be predicted from its location on the periodic table Periods are horizontal rows – shows how many electron energy levels an element has

6 Useful ctd… The modern periodic table has 7 periods that form 18 columns The columns are called groups, or families

7 Metals Luster – shiny Malleable – able to be hammered into shapes
Ductile – able to be drawn into wire Good conductors of heat and electricity Most are solid at room temperature

8 Nonmetals Nonmetals are found on the right side of the stairstep line
Poor conductors Brittle – will shatter if hammered Dull – not shiny

9 Metalloids Have some properties of metals and nonmetals
Brittle, hard, and somewhat reactive Most useful property is the ability to conduct electric current – used to make computer chips

10 What am I? This element is a solid Is a good conductor of heat
Used to make silverware

11 What am I? This element is a solid This element is a poor conductor
Found in every organic molecule Found in jewelry

12 What am I? This element is a liquid
This element is poisonous to humans This element is a good conductor This element is shiny

13 What am I? This element is a liquid This element is a poor conductor
This element is very reactive with metals

14 What am I? This element is a gas This element is a poor conductor
This element not reactive at all

15 What am I? This element is a solid
This element is a poor conductor of heat This element is a good conductor of electricity This element is brittle
