What is abstinence? The conscious decision not to participate in sexual activity of any kind

How can you benefit by remaining abstinent? Are NOT at risk of: –Getting pregnant –Being infected with a sexually transmitted disease Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) –An infectious disease that is spread by sexual contact Do you need to have sexual intercourse to contract a STD?

Emotional Benefits of Abstinence Being free from worry and stress about STDs and pregnancy Allowing time to develop the maturity to make important decisions Avoiding being manipulated by others Having an increased sense of self-control and self-respect Staying true to your values

Social Benefits of Abstinence Freedom to pursue a variety of friendships Less complicated relationships Better relationships with parents Chance to learn to build strong, lasting relationships based on mutual trust and respect Better reputation among peers
