Prof. Krzysztof Warmuzinski Polish Academy of Sciences Institute of Chemical Engineering Gliwice, Poland The Capture of Carbon Dioxide: R&D Status and Challenges

POST – COMBUSTION OXYFUEL COMBUSTION PRE – COMBUSTION

CAPTURE OPTIONS IN FOSSIL – FUEL POWER GENERATION

POST-COMBUSTION MATURE TECHNOLOGY → Absorption based on chemical solvents (amines) KEY CHALLENGES: reduce the efficiency penalty (process integration, CO 2 enrichment in flue gas) reduce equipment size improve the performance of solvents develop solid sorbents and the relevant processes develop membranes and robust membrane modules

OXYFUEL COMBUSTION MATURE TECHNOLOGY → Cryogenic air separation KEY CHALLENGES: reduce energy consumption for oxygen production (cryogenic, membrane and adsorptive separation) improve oxyfuel PF and CFB boilers improve oxyfuel gas turbines develop chemical looping combustion systems

PRE-COMBUSTION

KEY CHALLENGES: improve and scale-up gasifiers (sorption-enhanced) improve water-gas shift process (sorption-enhanced, membrane-enhanced) develop high-temperature separation techniques improve turbine performance for hydrogen-rich fuel
