Deep Dive into the Up-Dated Curriculum with Literacy Connections District Learning Day Grades 3-5 August 6, 2015

Do Now Complete the following List various stories that can be aligned with a HPELW lesson

Norms Be present and engaged. Be respectful of differences in perspective while challenging each other productively and respectively. Monitor “air time.” Make the most of the time we have. Stay focused on students.

Objective What will participants: Know: How to embed literacy lessons and activities within the HPELW classroom Understand: How to introduce Journey’s stories within the classroom lesson Do as a result of this presentation; Teachers will be able to refer to the updated curriculum and aligned Journey’s materials for classroom instruction

Literacy in Physical Education Physical education and literacy — two words that for too long have been disconnected. But are they really? How many times in your career have you heard a student say, “I just don’t like to read,” “I’m not good at math,” or “I am just not athletic.”

Content literacy and the traditional idea of literacy are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the common notion of educating the whole child should probably be updated to reflect attaining the total “literacies” of the child. Shape America, 2014 Literacy in Physical Education

Section 1: Grades 3-5 How do I use this curriculum? Embedding literacy activities that aligns to the District’s vision

The HPELW Curriculum and Literacy Activities Get into groups of 5’s Thumb through the grade- level Curriculum Guides and find a literacy activity. Identify the grade level, timeframe in which the lesson is to be taught and the story aligned to the lesson Demonstrate the activity

Section 2: “Aligning the PE or Health lesson to Journey’s reading materials In small groups, identify 2-stories that relate to HPELW standards Provide feedback on the story title(s) Cite implications for use

Practice introducing the Story Reinforce stories identified by classroom teachers, Relate that same story to Health or Physical Education teaching concepts – Activate prior knowledge – Review the story – Identify difficult concepts and vocabulary. – Relate the story to standards and activity – Allow students to create a skill, task or routine based on the story

Q-A Embedded Literacy What do you think will be the easiest process to embed literacy activities? What will be the most difficult? What else will you need to learn/do/ or have prior to implementing these activities?

Objectives Review What will participants: Know: How to embed literacy lessons and activities within the HPELW classroom Understand: How to introduce Journey’s stories within the classroom lesson Do as a result of this presentation; Teachers will be able to refer to the updated curriculum and aligned Journey’s materials for classroom instruction Refer to and align the “Journey’s” reading material to applicable nugget h ealth lessons

Next steps and activities for follow up Meet with Grade-Level Teams to identify stories and implementation timeframes Develop a calendar that reflects implementation dates of related stories

Reflection: One minute paper on post-it Jot down your “Take-Aways” Consider what you need to know and be able to do to successfully implement what you have learned in this session. – What is still unclear? – What professional development or additional resources do you need?

Remember It is never too check your Curriculum Guide regarding additional literacy activities and strategies !

Closing-Ticket Out-The Door Jot down one (1) Journey’s Story and one (1) literacy activity that you learned today.
