3 After completing today’s sessions you will: Know – The types of complex text that are appropriate for deeper reading activities with students. Understand - The important elements of text dependent questions. Do - Have experience through participation in a focused lesson using multiple pieces of text, and using text dependent questions.

4 Close Reading “Close reading highlights the central role the text should play in understanding what it means.” In other words, we need to teach a student to wrestle with a text to squeeze its meaning from the words, phrases and imagery on the page and not from the teacher telling the student what it means. Students must be challenged to arrive at their own understanding. By doing so, they own their understanding.

9 Revisiting Our Objectives Know - What types of text are desirable and/or appropriate for deeper reading activities with students. Understand - What the important points/steps of leading an effective lesson on a piece of text are. Understand - What are the important elements of text dependent questions for both multiple choice and extended response types of items. Do - Have firsthand experience of participation in a text focused lesson in addition to having multiple pieces of text, background knowledge and questions to go with each text in hand and ready to use in their instruction.
