3 Objectives Know: TNReady assessments are designed to assess true conceptual understanding and not just basic memorization and test-taking skills. Understand: Design and important elements of TNReady Three fundamental shifts in mathematics: focus, coherence and rigor in mathematics Do: Analyze the blueprints for the TNReady assessment Engage in the content and share strategies that build conceptual understanding 3

4 Norms Be present and engaged. Be respectful of differences in perspective while challenging each other productively and respectively. Monitor “air time.” Make the most of the time we have. Stay focused on students.

5 We are Preparing Students for a Changing World Few working professionals have simple multiple-choice options when solving a problem in the real world. In order for Tennessee students to be competitive in a world that is constantly changing, our students must strengthen their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. TNReady asks students to both master basic skills and explain how they use these skills to solve more complex problems. 5

6 TNReady Goals Provide real information about student readiness for postsecondary work. Anchor expectations about what students need to know and be able to do at every grade level to be ready. Provide actionable information for parents and educators to support student growth. Prove information about our competitiveness as a state. 6

7 TNReady will be more engaging. In math – students will solve multi-step problems, many without using a calculator, to show what they know. Much like teachers already do in their classrooms, TNReady will offer a variety of ways to show what they really know and can do. TNReady will be given in two parts. 7

9 Blueprint Activity Small Group Review the blueprint for your grade level or course. Discuss the following questions: Which standards are only assessed in either Part I or Part II? Which standards are assessed on both Part I and Part II? Which sections are assessed most heavily? Least? 9

10 TNReady - Part I Part I for Math will include performance tasks in grades 3 – 8. – These performance tasks will include open-ended responses and be multi-step problems that allow students to demonstrate several skills towards a practical application. Part I of TNReady will be administered during a window that opens in early February and closes in early March. – This is the same timeframe as the current writing assessment. 10

11 TNReady - Part II The second portion of TNReady will replace the current TCAP tests for math and English language arts administered in April/May. This portion will ask students to select responses for multiple types of questions. Performance on Part I and Part II will be combined into a single composite score for each student. 11

12 Math Item Types Overview There are 6 types of assessment items in Mathematics: 1.Student generated response 2.Graphic 3.Multiple Choice 4.Multiple Select 5.Performance Tasks 6.Technology Enhanced Items 12

13 Student Generated Response Students type in numeric answers from a palette of options. 13

14 Graphic Students create or manipulate a graph. 14

15 Multiple Choice Students select one answer.  Choose from a dropdown list  Select one correct answer from many options 15

16 Multiple Select Students select multiple options. 16

17 Performance Tasks Solve multi-step problems and demonstrate how solution is achieved. 1 task on Part 1 only in grades 3 – 8 only 17

18 Technology Enhanced Items These types of questions ask students to: Move or manipulate items Move around graphics Complete exercises that reflect real work activities like editing a paper or graphing an equation 18

19 TNReady Practice Tools Each standard will have an example question that reflects the design of TNReady test questions. Item Sampler Mini practice tests will be available for both Part One and Part Two of TNReady. 20 Online Assessment TNReady will be administered online. This gives Tennessee students an opportunity to develop critical technology skills they need for success, while also ensuring that they do not fall behind their peers in other states where online tests are given. We have phased in required online testing over the last four years. Many states have been testing online for 15+ years. 20

21 Calculator Policy Two central beliefs: 1.Calculators are important tools for college and career readiness 2.Students must be able to demonstrate many skills without reliance on calculators At all grade levels and in all courses, TNReady will include both calculator permitted and calculator prohibited sections. Handhelds are permitted with online testing. 21
