1 Deep Dive into the Up-Dated Curriculum with Literacy Connections District Learning Day 10:30-11:30 August 6, 2015

4 Objectives The objective of this session is review and introduce new embedded literacy strategies and activities within each curriculum grade- band.

5 Objectives Review What will participants: Know: How to embed literacy lessons and activities within the HPELW classroom Understand: How to introduce Journey’s stories within the classroom lesson Do as a result of this presentation; Teachers will be able to refer to the updated curriculum and aligned Journey’s materials for classroom instruction Refer to and align the “Journey’s” reading material to applicable nugget health lessons

6 Literacy in Physical Education Physical education and literacy — two words that for too long have been disconnected. But are they really? How many times in your career have you heard a student say, “I just don’t like to read,” “I’m not good at math,” or “I am just not athletic.”

7 Content literacy and the traditional idea of literacy are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the common notion of “educating the whole child should” probably be updated to reflect attaining the total literacies of the child. Literacy in Physical Education

8 Section 1: Grades PreK-K and Grades 1-2 How do I use this curriculum? How do I Embed literacy activities so that it aligns to the District’s vision

9 The HPELW Curriculum and Literacy Activities Thumb through the grade- level Curriculum Guides and find a literacy activity. Identify the grade level, timeframe in which the lesson is to be taught and the story aligned to the lesson Demonstrate the activity

10 Reflection: Literacy in the Curriculum Maps What resonated with you? What is similar to your current practice? What is different than your current practice? What are you going to change as a result?

11 Section 2: “Aligning the PE or Health lesson to Journey’s reading materials In small groups, identify stories that relates to HPELW standards Provide feedback on the story title(s) Cite implications for use

12 Practice introducing the Story Reinforce stories identified by classroom teachers, Relate that same story to Health or Physical Education teaching concepts – Activate prior knowledge – Review the story – Identify difficult concepts and vocabulary. – Relate the story to standards and activity – Allow students to create a skill, task or routine based on the story

14 Objectives Review What will participants: Know: How to effectively teach, monitor, capture and assess student work Understand: The importance of reviewing the Handbook and implementing the Portfolio Action Plan Do as a result of this presentation Effectively and accurately practice steps towards successfully implementing components of the portfolio growth measure process.

15 Next steps and activities for follow up Meet with Grade-Level Teams to identify stories and implementation timeframes Develop a calendar that reflects implementation dates of related stories
