1500 Portuguese Colonize Brazil On April 22, 1500, a Portuguese navigator, called Pedro Averse Cabral, reached the shores of Brazil. He took the country for Portugal. The country took its name from “brazil wood” This event started the war and conflict.

1947/48 Portugal and Spain gain more Portuguese sailors sailed around Africa, led by Vasco de Gama, they opened the sea route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean and then to the Far East Ocean. The Portuguese and Spanish ships took over many countries. They took more land from Brazil and shared it with Spain. The Brazil fought against them.

1580 Death of Portuguese King In 1578, the King of Portugal died and gave the crown to King Philip of Spain. Seizing this opportunity to claim the throne in Lisbon for himself, the Spanish King, Philip II, united Spain and Portugal, which remained under his rule from 1580 to 1640.This made the independence of the Brazil closer. They were hopeful that Spain would set them free.

No End of the Portugal Enemy In 1640, the Duke of Braganza, later Joao IV was able to claim the crown of Portugal. Brazil remained in Portuguese hands afterwards. The Brazil keep fighting but they loosed again. The children can’t go to school and There was no food for them to eat. The children cried for food.

1822 Independence from Portugal One year after Joao VI return to Portugal, Pedro gave Brazil independence and put himself on constitutional emperor. Later Pedro crowned himself emperor of Brazil. Americans had to also fight fiercely for their independence.

Brazil becoming a Republic country The absence of the “independence war” in Brazil is credited to the positive influence of the monarch Pedro II, who succeeded Pedro I. Brazil became a federal republic in November 15, Below is a flag of Brazil after 1889.

Brazil right now Today, Brazil is a vibrant democracy. The current President, Luis Lula de Silva, took office in January, The inaugural ceremony, in Brasília, was quite huge, with people from all over the country.
