ACTUAL Regents Do Now: What is the latitude of this observer? ① 90° N ② 66.5° N ③ 43° N ④ 23.5° N

Where are the explorers in this video?

The Equator 0° Latitude is called the equator and circles the middle of Earth (like a belt)! Your latitude on Earth describes how many degrees you are away from the equator.

The Prime Meridian 0° Longitude is called the Prime Meridian and circles the middle of Earth long ways (through the poles). Your longitude on Earth describes how many degrees you are away from the Prime Meridian.

Time Zones Longitude lines are also connected to time zones. Every 15° Longitude is equal to 1 hour. Time Zones west of us are earlier.

Minutes and Seconds One degree of latitude/longitude can cover a distance of 70 miles! To get more accurate measurements, each degree is divided into 60 minutes ‘. Each minute is divided into 60 seconds ‘’.

Discuss With a Partner! What do you think the coordinates of Ithaca, NY is? – Be sure to include minutes! 42° 30’ N, 76° 30’ W

Try it! See if you can work on these ACTUAL Regents questions about Latitude and Longitude.
