Work Based Learning Functional Skills Maths Session 1 Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Remember: In functional skills you will always have a calculator to help you. You need to learn the techniques over the next few pages and apply them to the exam. Write down the numbers and the working out you do, even if you use a calculator. General Advice

Fractions, Decimals and Percentages  Fractions, decimals and percentages are all ways of representing part of a whole.  The bottom part of a fraction shows how many equal parts the whole has been divided into.  The top part of the fractions shows how many of those parts you have.

Fractions  For example. The 6 at the bottom shows the cake has been divided into 6 pieces, and the number on the top shows how many of those pieces you have

Fractions of Amounts

We only need 3 quarters, so we times the 30 by x 3 =90

Fractions of Amounts Remember To find a fraction of an amount:  Divide the amount by the bottom  then multiply by the top 30

Decimals Decimals represent parts of a whole number with digits after the decimal point. This number is three point two five (not twenty five) Whole number Decimal point Decimals The point shows we have 3 whole ones also some parts of a whole one. If this was money it could represent 3 whole pounds and 25 parts of a pound (25 pence)

Decimals of amounts To find a decimal of an amount, simply multiply the amount by the decimal. Find 0.75 of x 0.75 = 450 So 0.75 of 600 = 450

Decimals of amounts Remember To find a decimal of an amount:  Multiply the amount by the decimal

Percentage Percent means out of 100  Per = out of cent = 100  There are lots of examples in maths where cent is used to mean 100  100 centimetres in a metre  100 years in a century  100 cents in a dollar  100 cents in a euro  100 legs on a centipede  100 percent is a whole Remember cent means 100

Percentage of amounts So a percentage is out of 100. when we want to find a percentage of an amount: Divide the amount by 100 Multiply by the percentage you want (the result of dividing by 100 is that you find 1%) For example 40% of ÷ 100 = 8 8 x 40 = 320 So 40% of 800 = 320 (this is 1% of 800, so if we want 40% we times by 40)

Percentage of amounts Remember To find a percentage of an amount:  Divide the amount by 100 (to find 1%)  Multiply by the percentage you want

Summary To find a percentage of an amount:  Divide the amount by 100 (to find 1%)  Multiply by the percentage you want To find a decimal of an amount:  Multiply the amount by the decimal To find a fraction of an amount:  Divide the amount by the bottom  Multiply by the top Learn this Page! Copy it out on paper

Converting between fraction, Decimal and Percentage You may also need to change a fraction into a decimal or percentage. This is very easy to do. Change a fraction to a decimal  Divide the top by the bottom Change a decimal to a percentage  Multiply by 100 Change a percentage to a fraction  Write it as a fraction out of 100 (if you need to change a fraction to a percentage, change it to a decimal first then to a percentage)
