Drugs The Misuse, and Abuse of Drugs

 What does it mean when you have a “drug centered” society?  Do you believe that the U.S. is a “drug centered society”?  WHAT IS A DRUG?

A drug centered society….  Every year pharmaceutical companies spend about $25 billion on advertising….  The alcohol industry spends an additional $18-$20 billion..  How often do you watch TV and NOT see an advertisement for some sort of drug? (beer, wine, headache medicine, Lunesta..)  The message we receive from all advertising is clear: If we take the drug we will feel better…

Why is this message bad?  Drugs can save lives….. right?  Drugs can reduce pain  Drugs can cure diseases  Drugs can treat illnesses  THE PROBLEM is that many people think drugs can solve all their problems.

What is a drug?  DRUG: any substance that causes a physical or emotional change in a person.  All drugs can be placed into one of the following categories:  Herbal  Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs  Prescription drugs  Tobacco products  Alcohol  Illegal drugs  Unrecognized drugs

Drug use, misuse and abuse.  Drug Use: taking drugs properly and in their correct amounts is called drug use.  Examples???  Drug misuse: the improper use of a drug. One way of misusing drugs is to take the wrong amount of a prescribed drug.  Examples??  Drug abuse: this occurs when a person takes a legal drug for a non-medical reason,or an illegal drug for any reason at all.  Examples???
