Tolerance Withdrawal Symptoms A condition in which the body becomes used to a drug Unpleasant reactions that occur when a person who is physically dependent on a drug no longer takes it.

10 Physical Dependence A condition in which a person develops tolerance to a drug and the drug becomes necessary or the person experiences withdrawal symptoms

A strong desire to continue using a drug for emotional reasons

12 Drug Antagonism – occurs when each drug’s effect is canceled out or reduced by the other
Example: because nicotine causes blood pressure to rise, it can cancel out the beneficial effect of medications taken to lower high blood pressure Drug Synergism – occurs when drugs interact to produce effects greater than those each drug would produce alone Example: the combination of certain sleep medications with small amounts of alcohol may cause rapid loss of consciousness

13 Stages of Progression to Drug Dependency:
Experimentation- a person is tempted to experiment with a drug; he tries it Desired effect- a person enjoys the feeling he gets from trying the drug; he continues to use the drug Tolerance- the drug may no longer have the same pleasurable effects; the person may suffer from withdrawal symptoms when he stops using the drug Denial- the person does not admit that drug use is causing problems; they claim that they can stop using the drug at any time Drug Dependence- a person has become dependent on the drug
