Clothes and Jewelry By : Haylie Auld and Sara Dickerson

Men wore wrap-around skirts that was tied at the waist with some type of belt. Sometimes the skirts were wrapped around their legs. The length of the skirt would depend on the time period. At first the skirts were short, then they were down to their calf.

 Egyptian women mostly wore full length straight dresses with either one or two shoulder straps. Later on it was popular for ladies to wear draped or pleated dresses.  Rich Egyptian women usually wore dresses made from fine transparent linen.  The rich Egyptian women preferred to decorate their clothes and liked to wear headdresses and jewelry.

 Children in ancient Egypt did not wear clothes until they wear around six years old. Then they would wear the same clothes women and men wore. Children didn’t usually wear clothes in the summer months though.

 Due to the Egyptians having a hot climate, they wore lightweight clothes. Both men and women wore linen clothes. Linen clothing was made from plant fibers.

 The ancient Egyptians had to make their clothes from their environment. Flax plants were used to make their clothes. The flax was pulled from the ground, not cut. The stems had to be half ripe to make the best thread. The stems were soaked for several days then they separated the fibers to make thread. The fibers were beaten until soft enough to be spun into thread.

 Ancient Egyptians wore headdresses. Emperors or Pharaohs wore lots of different headdresses. Sometimes they wore headdresses for protection from the heat. Most headdress had hieroglyphics or picture drawings. Some were for ceremonial purposes. Headdress were found in tombs. The most common style of headdresses were the nemes head cloth.

Living in the Mediterranean, ancient Egyptians had little need for foot wear. Sometimes Egyptians wore shoes with turned up toes. Most Egyptians usually went barefoot, but on special occasions they wore sandals.

 Some say that jewelry was one of the greatest things to happen to the Egyptians. People started to trade things for jewelry. So it became sort of like money.  Jewelry was an important part of society because it was a symbol for religion, tradition, and cultural beliefs.

 The Ancient Egyptians wore jewelry to show other people they were wealthy. Only the very richest could afford gold and precious stones.  They wore neck collars, rings, ear-rings, bracelets, decorated buttons, pendants, and necklaces.  They also believed it made them more attractive to the gods.

 The Ancient Egyptians wore jewelry made from simple, natural things to the most precious stones. The jewelry could be made from shells, plant branches, bones, cow hair, or precious stones. Their jewelry usually symbolized expressing joy and delight, or evil. The Egyptians put a lot of detail into making their jewelry.
