Unit 5 Objectives Students will identify words that begin with the /p/ sound. Students will listen attentively and follow directions.. Students will identify and say initial consonant sounds in words. Students will read a Decodable Book that focuses on words with initial and final /p/. Students will blend sounds to read words. Students will identify and read high-frequency words.

Warming Up Use one or both of warm-ups Catching the Letter Train Game. Tell the students that you are going to play the Catching the Letter Train Game. Point to the Pp sound card and tell them to give you a word that begins with the sound for the letter Pp, /p/.

Warming Up Use one or both of warm-ups Following Directions Simon Says Play Simon Says with the students.

Phonemic Awareness Oral Blending Initial Consonant Isolation Lion Puppet will say a word. Alphabetic Principle Blending Write the letter p on the board say the sound /p/, next the letter a, blend the sounds, next add the letter t and blend the word. Repeat , using the word ham. Review high-frequency words. Introduce the Decodable Book 2, “Hat”. Students read whole group. Students read in pairs with peer teachers.

Reading and Responding Objectives: Students will view and appreciate fine art. Students will use appropriate tone and volume toaskand answer questions about art. Students will take turns in discussions of art. Students will compare the depiction of perseverance in artwith that shown in reading selections. Students will create their own art and label it. Studentswill connect art to the unit theme Stick to It. Read a book form the Leveled Classroom Library. Students will draw a picture and write a story about times they have used perseverance.
