2 Unit 5 Objectives Students will produce rhymes. Students will identify syllables in words. Students will locate and blend the final consonant sounds /m/ and /s/. Students will review the names of the letters of the alphabet. Students will begin to attain mastery in attaching the /a/ sound to the letter As.

3 Warming Up Use one or both of warm-ups Find the Rhyme. Display the Big Book, Pickled Peppers, open to the poem “By Myself” Asks students to say other words that rhyme with twin and chin (bin, fin grin, kin, pin, tin, win). Say the following sets of words: joys boilboys songlong sing breadpieseyes browngownblue

4 Warming Up Use one or both of warm-ups Review Syllables. Compound Words Picture Cards (Sample: cook, book; cat, fish; eye, ball; horse, shoe; sun, flower; yard, sticks; bed, post. Ask students to say each picture name, then say them together: cookbook Students should tell how the meaning of the word is different from the meaning of each separate word, cook and book. Repeat with other Picture Cards to make compound words.

Read a book form the Leveled Classroom Library. Students will draw a picture and write a story about times in school that they have used perseverance.
