Lesson Plan English Vocabulary - the topic I am focusing on is decoding words by using sound boxes Objectives I want the students to know how to use the strategy of a sound box to help them decode a word they do not know Content Standards- Phonemic Awareness, Word Recognition and Fluency Hear and say the separate phonemes in words, such as identifying the initial consonant sound in a word, and blend phonemes to say words

2. Lesson Plan Procedures- Lay out a 2-sound box, a 3-sound box and a 4-sound box. Give the children different words to sound and for every sound they hear to put an X in the box. Evaluation: My evaluation would be using sorts to see if the children understand which sounds go together and to see patterns. I could also give them words to spell out, like spelling test. Materials- dry erase boards, markers, tissues, word or word family

5. Introduction We are going to listen for how many sounds you hear in a word and then try to see if you can match the letters. There will be information on the next 6 slides and a quiz at the end so make sure you are paying attention!

6. Sound Boxes What are sound boxes? Sound boxes are squares that can be drawn. You can have two, three or four boxes depending on how many sounds you hear in a word. Don’t get tricked I’m not looking for letters, I’m listening for sounds!

7. What to do Things you need to know to get started: I am going to ask you to draw your boxes so please listen to how many I tell you. We are not looking for the amount of letters, but the amount of sounds you hear. Every time you hear a new sound but a dot with your marker in the box. At the end we will try and name the letters and write them to the side.
