WebQuest: Building A Home 8 th Grade Math & Art Application Corinne McKenna

What Does it Take to Effectively Build a House? Your task is to work together in groups of 4 (architect, builder, interior designer, and home owner) to construct and design a home. You will have a certain budget and the roles that each member will play will impact how decisions are made. You will then present to the class the decisions you made, why you made certain decisions, and your final product (which can be drawn or actually constructed with a material of your choice). Your group will have four weeks to complete this project and then group presentations will begin.

Guidelines for Building & Designing Budget = $1,000,000 Area to build house (garage, yard included) = ½ acre of land (43, 560 ft 2 )

Roles Architect: This person will produce the plans for the home that will be built. They must take into account the area that can be used and what the home owner wants. Builder: This person has the job of figuring out what building supplies they need, plumbing and electricity needs, and hiring crews to complete the job. Interior Designer: This person will make decisions when it comes to how the home will be decorated once the building portion is complete. They will be in charge of adding furniture and painting the rooms. Home Owner: This person will contribute to all parts of the home construction and design. They will have a say in all the decisions that are made for the entire process. If they do not approve of a decision, it should not be done.

Architect What designs will appeal most to your home owner? What designs will be most cost effective? Should the environment be taken into account in the design? Also, be sure to be aware of the square footage allowed. You can use already produced floor plans to create your own ideas. Use the following to make your decisions and fill out the worksheet to show what you learn from each resource: Floor Plans: Square Footage Help: Home Plans: Design Help:

Builder What materials are best for your project? How big of a crew will you need? How will you need to communicate with the architect and the home owner to ensure that everything goes as planned? Use the following to make your decisions and fill out the worksheet to show what you learn from each resource: Materials to Use: improvement/construction/green/10-cutting-edge-building- materials.htmhttp://home.howstuffworks.com/home- improvement/construction/green/10-cutting-edge-building- materials.htm Materials to Use: needed-build-house.htmlhttp:// needed-build-house.html Pay for Crew Members: jobs/construction-worker/salaryhttp://money.usnews.com/careers/best- jobs/construction-worker/salary

Interior Designer What colors look best together? What furniture will fit the house once complete? Will the home owner agree with the decisions you are making? Do you have money in the budget to purchase high-end items, or do you have to shop smart? Use these resources when making your decisions and fill out the worksheet to show what you learn from each resource: Decorating: Furniture: Furniture:

Home Owner As the home owner who will eventually live in the newly constructed home, how will you communicate with the architect, builder, and designer? Will you play a big role in the decision making process, or would you rather let the architect, builder, and designer do what they do best? Do you want specialty rooms in your home? Do you have certain specifications that must be followed during the construction process? Please use these resources when making your decisions and fill out the worksheet to show what you learn from each resource: Advice: Advice: (pay special attention to the questions listed at the bottom) *Home owner should also see the websites listed on each of the other roles pages because they should be aware of the decisions that are being made by the architect, builder, and interior designer.
