 This presentation  adapts concepts for ACCV purposes  provides viable concepts for ACCV consideration  Is informational with the goal of informing ACCV discussion 2009 Rand Report on National Vaccine Advisory Committee 3

 Proactively request from HHS leadership their highest priority public health issues related to VICP, vaccine liability protection, vaccine injury compensation and the duties contained in the ACCV charter at the first ACCV meeting of each calendar year.  Request to be advised of updates should new priorities emerge during the year.  May be done through DVIC staff  Current priorities are known to include:  Adult immunization  Immunization during pregnancy to protect either mother or child  Securing funding for vaccine safety research  Will help ACCV provide policy input where HHS needs it most. Strategies for ACCV 4

 Proactively request feedback annually at the first ACCV meeting of each calendar year on recommendations from the past year regarding their usefulness (clarity, actionability, & relevance)  What actions have been or will be taken by HHS on ACCV recommendations?  HHS Reasons for not acting as recommended on other actions  Informs a quality improvement process for ACCV for future recommendations Strategies for ACCV 5

 Think strategically on how to communicate with interested audiences  Identify components in stakeholder groups who would be interested to act on recommendations  Seek ways to improve the ACCV portion of the VICP web-site  Focus on a small number of high priority recommendations and clearly communicate the value of their implementation, both overall and relative to other policy options.  Remember advisory role Strategies for ACCV 6

 Use ACCV’s diverse representation to report on how that stakeholder group is affected (benefits and risks) by the proposed recommendation  Provide reasons why each stakeholder supports or does not support the recommendation, in essence the value of implementation  Improve coordination between ACCV, NVAC, and ACIP  To provide a more comprehensive and consistent input for HHS; and  To increase the impact of recommendations Strategies for ACCV 7

 Develop recommendations that are specific in terms of  What actions are needed  Why they are needed  Indicate degree of support from each interest group  Who should implement action items  When should action items be implemented  Programmatic effects if adopted such as  Cost implication  Improve processing time  Cast a wider net for compensation  Streamline Program Strategies for ACCV 8
