New England Colonies

Set-up Cornell Notes (IN Pages 77-78) Title: Establishing New England Essential Question: How did religion influence the settlement & government of the New England Colonies?

Background Information Early 1500s: King Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church He established/controlled the Church of England A century later, Separatists were trying to break away from the Church of England The Pilgrims were a Separatist group

The Pilgrims Leave England Pilgrims fled to Holland to live freely but soon wanted a new home They asked the Virginia Company to settle in America “as a distinct body by themselves” November 1620: the Mayflower landed in Plymouth

The Pilgrims Found Pilgrims Rough beginnings (same as Jamestown) Met helpful Native Americans: Samoset & Squanto They learned how to plant, hunt & fish and set up a trade network with the Natives Things went so well, the first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 to celebrate their good fortune

Warm-Up (IN Page 76 BOTTOM) What is meant by the term, “Separatist”? The term Separatist refers to… Why did the Pilgrims come to North America? Pilgrims came to North America… Where did the Pilgrims establish their colony? The Pilgrims established their colony… How were the Pilgrims able to survive & succeed in North America? Pilgrims were able to survive and succeed in North America because…

The Puritans Come to Massachusetts Bay Between 1630-1640, the Puritans left England to escape religious persecution They wanted to reform or “purify” the practices of the Church of England (not break away from it like the Separatists) Thousands of Puritan families came to New England (called the Great Migration)

The Puritans come to Massachusetts Bay 1630: Massachusetts Bay Company set out to start a colony (after receiving a royal charter) Puritans were well prepared and didn’t suffer through a starving time John Winthrop was the colony’s Puritan governor The colony was set up as a commonwealth (everyone worked for the good of the whole group)

The New England Way Basic unit of the commonwealth was the congregation (church group) Held town meetings to create laws for the community (only male church members could vote or hold office) By law, everyone attended church Emphasized duty, godliness, hard work & honesty Required children to learn to read (Bible)

Other Puritan Colonies Thomas Hooker moved his congregation to the Connecticut Valley Adopted the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut (allowed more people to vote/limited power the governor)
