EDICT OF NANTES THE EDICT OF NANTES, ISSUED ON APRIL , BY HENRY IV OF FRANCE. IT GRANTED THE PROTESTANTS OF FRANCE SUBSTANTIAL RIGHTS IN A NATION STILL CONSIDERED MOSTLY CATHOLIC. THE LAW GRANTED RELIGIOUS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES TO THE FRENCH PROTESTANTS

HENRY OF NAVARRE HENRY WAS BORN ON DECEMBER 13, 1553, IN PAU, FRANCE. HE WAS KING OF NAVARRE FROM 1572 TO 1610 AND KING OF FRANCE FROM 1589 TO HE WAS THE FIRST FRENCH MONARCH OF THE HOUSE OF BOURBON. HE PUT AN END TO THE CIVIL WARS OF FRANCE BY EMBRACING THE ROMAN CATHOLIC RELIGION. HE WAS CROWNED BY THE UNITED NATION AT CHARTRES IN TO SECURE HIS OLD FOLLOWERS, HE PUBLISHED THE EDICT OF NANTES APRIL 15, 1598

WHAT HAPPENED HENRY OF NAVARRE ENDED THE CRISIS AND RESTORED ORDER BY SIGNING THE LAW THE EDICT OF NANTES. THIS LAW GUARANTEED RELIGIOUS FREEDOM FOR PROTESTANTS. IT ACCOMPLISHED THIS BY ALLOWING FOR THE AMNESTY AND RESTORATION OF CIVIL RIGHTS.

WHO WAS INVOLVED HENRY IV OF FRANCE LED THE HUGUENOTS AGAINST ROYAL ARMY FOR YEARS. IN FRANCE THE PROTESTANT GROUPS FOUGHT AGAINST THE CATHOLICS UNTIL HENRY IV OF FRANCE BECAME KING AND BECAME CATHOLIC. HE GAVE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM ENDING FRENCH WARS OF RELIGION CALVINIST PROTESTANTS OF FRANCE (HUGUENOTS)= THEY FOUGHT AGAINST CATHOLIC FOR RELIGIOUS CONTROL OF FRANCE POPE CLEMENT VIII- HE RESENTED THE EDICT WAS POPE DURING HENRYS REIGN LOUIS XIV- HE REVOKED THE EDICT IN 1685 JEANNE D'ALBRET, QUEEN OF NAVARRE- WAS HIS MOM AND RULED BEFORE HIM

HOW DOES THIS EVENT SHOW RELIGIOUS DISUNITY IN EUROPE? IN FRANCE, THE PROTESTANTS WERE AT WAR WITH THE CATHOLICS. HENRY, THE LEADER OF THE PROTESTANTS, CONVERTED AND BECAME CATHOLIC. THIS ENDED THE FIGHTING. WHEN HE CONVERTED, THE CATHOLICS ACCEPTED HIM AS KING WHICH LED TO POLITICAL STABILITY. IN 1598, HENRY ISSUED THE EDICT OF NANTES WHICH GAVE PROTESTANTS RELIGIOUS FREEDOM. THE EDICT OF NANTES WAS A SYMBOL OF THE FACT THAT THE WAR OF RELIGIONS WAS OVER.
