Managing Migration Lesson objectives: To investigate how migration can be managed Keywords 1.Brain drain – The migration of skilled and educated young workers. 2.Depopulation – The lowering of the population of an area.

Starter TASK: In groups discuss and write the main problems of migration on the post its. Afterwards group the problems as economic, social/cultural and political problems. (NOTE: Problems can be linked to home or host country).

These are some solutions to problems caused by migration. Think! How would they help to lessen the problems of migration? 1.Improve training of local workers so migrants are not needed. 2.Set quotas (limits) for how many migrants can come into the country. 3.Use point based system to recruit migrants. The migrants who score the most point on their application will be allowed to come into the country. 4.Set specific requirements for immigrants. 5.Set specific requirements for emigrants. 6.Only send migrants to cities, towns which can accommodate them and where they are needed. 7.Give money home countries so they can improve industries. 8.Bond university students to work in their home country for set number of years. 9.Raise the cost of visa application for entering the country. 10.Give grants to migrants to return home. 11.Provide public education about migration and migrants. 12.Enforce laws to protect migrants.
