Introduction Diversity Small Group Communication Media Literacy

DIVERSITY A culmination of all aspects of our lives that make us different and unique from each other. Our classroom, our college and our community. Moving forward: Maintain a strong sense of understanding, respect and participation in the diverse-rich community in which I live and learn.

Small Group Communication Three to thirteen people Characteristics can be directly or indirectly observable Our symposium groups – Climate Communication Type A healthy climate Energized group process Harmonizes ideas Recognizes others Reconciles conflicts Builds enthusiasm for the group

Small Group Communication Moving forward: Use the communication concepts I learned in class and the symposia experience to help me to be a better small group member.

Media Literacy According to the Alliance for a Media Literate America, “Media literacy empowers people to be both critical thinkers and creative producers of an increasingly wide range of messages using image, language, and sound. It is the skillful application of literacy skills to media and technology messages. Within North America, media literacy is seen to consist of a series of communication competencies, including the ability to ACCESS, ANALYZE, EVALUATE and COMMUNICATE information in a variety of forms including print and non-print messages.”

Media Literacy Agenda setting Gatekeepers Manage mass media – take control! Be responsive

Media Literacy Moving forward: The lively discussion during class and conversations with colleagues after class challenged me to be more focused on my media literacy.

THANK YOU!! The great experience of learning together! My symposia team – Peng and Corey !! Excellent educators – Shelby & Farrah!!! Happy New Year and best wishes in your adventures ahead!!!!
