iPads for Sawnee Sawnee ElementaryApple &

What is iPad? As most of you know, is a line of tablet computer created by Apple, Inc. The user interface is built around the device’s multi-touch screen, including virtual keyboard. It has built in Wi-Fi.

Sawnee Elementary Vision for Technology Use The vision of Sawnee Elementary is to maximize technology to positively impact student achievement. Technology will be utilized by students to produce quality work and to create an environment where there is excellence in student academic performance.

How will iPad’s in the classroom support our vision? First and foremost, it will support the vision of Sawnee because it will increase the engagement in the classroom. It also easily used technology in the hands of our students that will allow them to produce quality work. It also offers multiple functions that will help increase the academics of our students.

Appropriate Use The iPad would be appropriate for all of our students from K-5 as well as learners with disabilities. It would be best to allow each homeroom to have 10 iPads. Easy access to technology means more teachers would be willing to use this technology.

Equipment and/or Software needed for Implementation iPad iPad cases iPad storage container

Technical Support All Apple hardware comes with a two-years limited warranty and telephone technical support on hardware as well as software. Collection of video tutorials, classroom guides, and web pages for educators

Limitations of iPad Teachers must be willing to implement this technology in the classroom. Teachers may have to research for additional apps that are best for their students needs. The software keyboard on the iPad might be problematic for users. Many report that typing is fine for note-taking, but not as user friendly for writing a paper. A docking station with a keyboard or a Bluetooth keyboard could be purchased to overcome this iPad limitation.

Cost iPad$ 94, homerooms with 10 iPads iPad caseincl. 250 for each iPad iPad storage for each homeroom$ 13,980 Tech Support and Training$ 5,880 Total Charges$114,610

Funding Sources PTA RESPECT Grant Technology Funds from School and County

How will i-Pads meet Content Standards iPads can be worked into every common core content standard. There are many apps that meet reading, writing, grammar, as well as math standards Apps are one of the best tools iPads have to offer because there is literally an app that meets each of the content standards. There are also apps to help with Assisted Technology for Special Education Students.

How iPads will meet technology standards IPads are great for communication and collaboration between peers as well as others outside of the classroom They are also great tools to allow students to research standards based topics. Students can also use iPads to create innovative products. Because iPads would be more readily available in the classroom, students would have the opportunity to become proficient with the operation and concept of these tools.

iPads in Writing Study done by an Ohio English teacher showed the students did 8% better on passing the writing portion of standardized test. Graphic Organizers Reference Material-Thesaurus, Dictionary, Encyclopedia Word Processor Apps Pierce, Margo. 2011, September 6.

iPads with IEP Learners There are many apps that can assist special education students. The ease of accessibility and navigation are positives for these students. The positive aspect of being included in the use of this technology would be a moral buster.

Communication with iPad Students will have the ability to communicate with peers in the school as well as outside of the school. Students could keep parents informed about projects they are working on and upcoming events. iPads could also be used to gain access to experts in topics we may be discussing in class.

Research on effectiveness Beneficial to learning and teaching Students are more motivated Students make more progress Students ability to collaborate Heinrich, Paul.

Research of effectiveness cont. Was used for tasks that best suited its use rather than simply because it was available, Offered quick access to Apps required for particular learning tasks, Was engaging learning, depending on choice of Apps, Enabled reinforcement and rote learning of basic concepts for learners at all levels, Supported creativity, Strongly supported research and information fluency and critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. Heinrich, Paul.

Implementation Plan 1. Purchase iPads and accessories 2. Professional Development for Teachers ITS will give a two day training for teachers on how to use and different apps of an iPad 3. Student Training Students must be trained before teachers will be allowed to keep iPads in there room. Students will be trained by ITS as well as homeroom teacher on how the iPad works.

Reflection Way more support for iPads in the classroom than against Very impressed at how this tool can generate such an authentic learning environment Understand that the success of this tool really relies on how well the teacher embraces this technology and uses this technology in the classroom. I better understand how important it is to have a plan in place before implementing technology and to have everyone on board with the implementation.
