Working together for a safer world Bringing Reality to Marine Environmental Issues

Shipping needs your Help!

Facts about the shipping industry If sea trade stops the world stops. Shipping is the most regulated of all transport modes. Yet moving goods by sea is already the most environmentally friendly option.

The Regulations – Started well then………  MARPOL  Ballast Water  Emissions  Fuel Started as Don’t but now have to Do

MARPOL i. Oil ii. Noxious Liquids iii. Packaged Harmful Substances iv. Sewage v. Garbage vi. Air Pollution

Ballast Water Various Requirements locally for 30 years Forthcoming Regulations / Available Technology Miss-Match Approval of Equipment Issues Leaves Ship Owner Exposed

Emissions Availability of low sulphur fuel Technology Issues (again) Alternative Fuels LNG Ethane Methanol

Fuels IFO LNG Other

Everyone has to take their part in the responsibility Academia Governments Regulators IMO, EU, USCG, Flag Administrations, Local Authorities Charterers Finance Institutions Insurers Ports Terminals Shipping Companies All other Stakeholders

Lloyd’s Register – What is our role? Present Verification – All aspects Future Aspire to be invited: Design Stage of Regulations Concept Stage of Equipment Allow Lloyd’s Register (and other leading Class Societies) to ensure the proposed Regulations are realistic

Lessons from all the above Regulations on associated stakeholders are not always compatible with the Shipping Regulations There is not always the Technology available to comply with the Regulations All Stakeholders in the Shipping Industry have to work together to improve the Environmental Issues as there is already so much that has been done (Shipping most regulated transport industry) Time, effort and resources (especially financial) are being used in areas that do not make the impact expected

Shipping needs your Help! As Academia, Thought Leaders, Respected Advisors You Are In A Unique Position To Influence The Legislators, Governments And Local Authorities In Environmental Issues. As With Every Aspect Of Life There Are Limited Resources. We Must Ensure That These Resources Are Utilised On Requirements That Actually Have A Real Impact On The Environment.
