Agenda What is the Charlotte Award? What is a book trailer? What is the Charlotte Award committee doing with book trailers?

NYSRA Charlotte Award – To encourage children to read and appreciate fine literature Biennial award for children’s literature – Students vote for their favorite books from ballots created by the NYSRA Charlotte award committee. – In 2012, almost 12,000 votes were counted for students’ favorites. – Authors and illustrators are honored at the annual NYSRA conference.

Book Selection Process Committee members are selected by the chair and NYSRA board to reflect the diversity of our membership with the goal of having representatives across the state (look for a call this spring!) Hundreds of books are submitted to the 10 person committee Books are read and discussed by the committee and NY teachers and students as the ballot is being created

Ballot Book considerations Published within the 2 year time frame of the award Books that will encourage children and youth to read and appreciate fine literature. We choose books for the ballot with high quality text and illustrations. Books that represent the diversity of our state. We choose books for the ballot that reflect male and female viewpoints as well as books that reflect the cultural and racial diversity of our readers. Books that demonstrate different genres and formats. We choose books from a variety of genres and formats, including picture books, novels, or graphic novels for all age levels. Books that are written by NY authors are given special consideration as we like to highlight our state's authors, but we also look beyond our NYS borders for great literature. Most importantly, we choose books that that appeal to children and youth as well as appeal to their teachers. Most of our books are read in school and library settings so we aim to choose books that will be read and enjoyed by everyone.
