Using Multimedia Tools to Enhance Instruction and Student Learning KATIE DORR

Using Images Find a picture that you seem to “connect” with on a personal or professional basis. Be prepared to share with group.

Why use Multimedia Tools? Students who learned from materials containing both text and graphics produced 55 percent to 121 percent more accurate solutions to problems, according to David Taylor at the University of Maryland. The use of images, along with words, diminishes the overwhelming nature of text and helps the student to manage the cognitive load, which increases retention.

Using Images to Support Learning Activation of prior knowledge is engaged quickly with visual analogy, and mental models are created easily as diagrams can enhance understanding of how a concept works. Additionally, learning is made easier because simulations allow students to visualize real-life situations, and motivation is increased as students are able to see the relevance of skills. To explore using images in the classroom check out: www.bighugelabs.comwww.bighugelabs.com

Finding Pictures Advanced Google Search This search will Allow you and Your students to Filter their searches Based on usage Rights. 1 2

Using Images to Support Learning  Task #1  Find an image that you could use for your classroom (vocabulary term/concept, character from a novel, picture of a math problem, influential figure from history, etc.)  Create a project using the site: www.bighugelabs.com that you could use in your classroom. www.bighugelabs.com

Word Clouds Word Clouds can help students: www.wordle.netwww.wordle.net & www.tagxedo.comwww.tagxedo.com Identify the main idea Analyze character traits Analyze their own writing

Word Clouds – Comparing Documents Lincoln’s 2 nd Inaugural Speech 1865 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.1 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.1 Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.9 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.9 Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take

Word Clouds – Assessment Students read primary source documents that included written accounts of individuals interactions with George Washington. As they read they had to pull out defining characteristics of our first president and summarize their findings. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.2CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.

Word Clouds – Assessment At the end of a unit on the Revolutionary War, students were asked to create a list of the most important words/phrases related to this time period in United States History. 14 Making your Images Come to Life Thinglink – Making Interactive Picture - http://www.thinglink.com/scene/558402576710631425http://www.thinglink.com/scene/558402576710631425 Provide students with an opportunity to show their thinking visually as well as auditorially. Students can create links to websites and upload documents to support their analysis. Library of Congress Example

Making Movies - Book Trailers  Our class created a “Book Trailer Film Festival” using wikispaces. Each student was responsible for creating a book trailer for the novel Chains.  Animoto – www.animoto.comwww.animoto.com

Before we start...  Provide clear guidelines, rubrics and timeline for project.  Gather potential pictures, songs, websites for students (this will greatly cut down on “research” time).  Require a rough draft – simple sketch, storyboard, etc.  Have students create a daily task sheet – this will help them prioritize tasks and stay focused.  It is ok not to know everything about the program before you start. I usually learn just as much from the students as they do from me.

Making Movies with Students  Katie’s favorite site for creating movies  Animoto – www.animoto.comwww.animoto.com  Photopeach – www.photopeach.comwww.photopeach.com  Movie Maker  Music – www.freeplaymusic.comwww.freeplaymusic.com
